Heavy rainfall has disrupted ongoing upgrade works at the Katosi Water Treatment Plant, delaying maintenance progress and affecting water supply to parts of Mukono, Kampala and surrounding areas, with engineers now accelerating efforts to restore normal distribution within the shortest time possible.
National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has confirmed that the ongoing system upgrade works and routine maintenance at the Katosi Water Treatment Plant were slowed down by heavy downpour experienced in the area on Wednesday night, affecting scheduled timelines for completion.
NWSC communications manager John Fisher said the weather conditions interfered with key stages of the works but assured customers that engineers were working urgently to restore normal supply.
“The system upgrade works and routine maintenance at the Katosi Water Treatment Plant have been delayed by heavy downpour experienced in Katosi last night. Our team of specialist engineers is working hard to overcome this setback and restore water supply as soon as possible today,” Fisher said.
The disruption has affected water supply to several areas including Katosi, Kisoga, Mukono, Seeta, Mbalala, Namugongo, Namanve, Sonde, parts of Kireka, Kamuli, Kyaliwajala, Bulindo, Nsasa, Mulawa, Naalya, Ntinda, Kisaasi, Najeera, Luteete, Gayaza, parts of Kamwokya, parts of Mbuya and surrounding communities.
Despite the setback, engineers at the site have continued with critical works. According to NWSC updates, welding works have been completed, coating protection for welded joints has been finalized, backfilling and compaction are ongoing, while concrete casting is expected to be completed by 10pm.
NWSC technical teams have maintained that all efforts are being made to complete the works and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible, noting that the upgrade remains essential for improving the reliability of the system.
Related technical updates indicate that engineers are currently installing a major transmission pipeline as part of ongoing improvements at the plant, with the shutdown affecting a significant portion of water production capacity supplied to Kampala and surrounding areas.
Officials have previously explained that the Katosi Water Treatment Plant is undergoing major maintenance and expansion works aimed at strengthening long-term water supply reliability, with the system temporarily relying on alternative production sources during the upgrade period.
NWSC has urged affected customers to remain patient as restoration works continue, emphasizing that full water supply will resume once the final stages of construction and system stabilization are completed.
